*15*—FRANK OCEAN-SONGS FOR WOMEN

She isn’t listening to his songs anymore, but I am.  Nostalgia Ultra is Ocean’s debut solo album and it’s a delicious mixing and melding of R&B, Hip-hop, rap, and funk with a little dash of Shuggie Otis style.

His biography says he was evacuated from The University of New Orleans to Los Angeles ahead of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. He stayed to pursue a career in music and joined the hip-hop collective OFGWKTA. He’s written for others, such as John Legend and Beyoncé, but a voice this wry, this subtle and deft needs to be heard.

Fed up with the lack of attention from his label, Def Jam, he released Nostalgia Ultra for free on his Tumblr.

The future looks smooth.
