I think what Colin Stetson can do with a saxophone is astounding, but this piece almost didn’t make my list because, frankly, it’s not something I listen to often. My pleasure in New History Warfare:Vol 2 is in its strangeness, its challenges to traditional thinking about instruments and the virtuosity of its composer and performer. This is music to be appreciated live, in the moment. It demands my full attention. I rarely have much of that to spare.
