*10*—TIM HECKER-NO DRUMS*

This spot was reserved for James Blake’s Willheim Scream when I decided to sum up my music experiences for 2011. The Blake piece seemed to be a touchstone for so much of what caught critical attention in the past months, and it most certainly got more radio airplay. I don’t think Tim Hecker’s No Drums was played on any mainstream music station even here in Montreal, Hecker’s home base. So why the switch? Because Blake’s vocal tricks are irritating after awhile and I end up wanting to scream. Hecker’s album, Ravedeath 1972, is no less dense with loops and layers, but this song invites quiet introspection and on a deeply personal level, reflects my emotional state during most of this year.
