Montreal’s Galaxie suffered a bit this year for being called this year’s Karkwa, simply because it was the only francophone band to make the Polaris Prize shortlist. Not only is the comparison lazy and condescending, it’s inaccurate. The two bands share language and a love of rock, but they are not the same. Kawkwa is rock ballads, anthems and explorations of the psyche. Galaxie’s Tigre et Diesel is an electro-rock dance party. They’ve been criticised for being a 90s echo, but I defy you to sit still through Piste 1. That’s as fresh a dance tune as you heard this year.
